Lichen is not a single organism—it's a fascinating symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an alga (or cyanobacterium). The fungus provides structure and protection, while the alga or cyanobacterium produces food through photosynthesis. Together, they form lichen, which can often be seen growing harmlessly on the bark of trees. While it looks like the lichen is feeding off the tree, it's actually just using the surface for support. This mutualistic relationship allows lichen to survive in tough conditions and contributes to a healthy ecosystem by absorbing pollutants and supporting biodiversity. It's a beautiful example of nature working in harmony. Dr. Taylor Clem is the County Director for UF/IFAS Extension Nassau
