Interview with Judy Willis, the President of the Florida Native Plant Society tells as it is time to re-wild our yards.

As new developments continue to expand across Florida, it's more important than ever to embrace native plants and sustainable landscaping practices. Rewilding our yards—allowing nature to reclaim some space—can make a meaningful difference.

Rewilding means mowing less, welcoming so-called “weeds,” and saying no to harmful chemicals. These changes support biodiversity, improve soil health, and help pollinators thrive. While some homeowners associations (HOAs) may have rules that discourage naturalistic yards, there are still small, impactful steps you can take.

Start simple: plant native species around your yard, especially in borders or less visible corners. Choose plants that are adapted to our local climate and soils—they’ll need less water and maintenance. Most importantly, begin thinking of your yard not just as a private space, but as a part of the greater ecosystem.

A rewilded Wildlight can be a healthier, more resilient community for all of us—humans, plants, and wildlife alike.
